Former Georgia Senator David Perdue on Monday announced he will run for Governor of the Peach State in 2022, and immediately gained the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
He’ll be running in the Republican primary against incumbent Republican governor Brian Kemp, who has frequently clashed with Trump.
Perdue’s announcement pits him in a primary race not just against Kemp, but also against a conservative favorite: former Democrat State Rep-turned Republican Vernon Jones.

Perdue Comes Out Swinging
On Monday evening, Trump released an endorsement of Perdue. Trump called Purdue a “conservative fighter,” and also said,
“David Perdue will eliminate the Income Tax, secure the Elections, defend the Second Amendment, support our great Farmers, get crime in Atlanta and other places under control, take care of our great Vets, and put parents back in charge of the schools.”
Cody Hall, spokesman for the Kemp campaign, responded to Purdue’s announcement by calling him “the man who lost Republicans the United States Senate.”

Hall continued, “Perdue’s only reason for running is to soothe his own bruised ego, because his campaign for U.S. Senate failed to inspire voters at the ballot box — twice.”

Perdue And Trump Blast Kemp
Both David Purdue and Donald Trump blasted Gov. Brian Kemp and hold him responsible for caving to the left and the subsequent electoral disaster in Georgia, losing both Republican Senate seats to Democrats.
In Trump’s endorsement statement, he called Kemp a “failure,” and “a very weak Governor.” Trump also said that, “[H]e can’t win because the MAGA base — which is enormous — will never vote for him.”
David Perdue echoed statements from Trump, not only blaming Kemp for the GOP loss of Georgia, but also Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
He stated in his campaign announcement video,
“To fight back, we simply have to be united. Unfortunately, today, we are divided, and Brian Kemp and Brad Raffensperger are to blame. Look, I like Brian, this isn’t personal. It’s simple. He has failed all of us and cannot win in November. Instead of protecting our elections, he caved to Abrams and cost us two Senate seats, the Senate majority, and gave Joe Biden free rein.”

Abrams Is Back
Currently, the likely Democrat candidate for the top job in Georgia is Stacey Abrams, who announced her candidacy last week. Kemp beat her by less than two percentage points in 2018, and with many Republicans being a bit disillusioned with him after the 2020 election flap, it could be likely that Republicans want a change on the ticket.
Abrams has spent most of her time either claiming that she actually won the 2018 gubernatorial election and had the election stolen from her.
Trump also didn’t miss the chance to zing both Abrams and Kemp by releasing a statement after Abrams announced her candidacy,
“Stacey ‘The Hoax’ Abrams has just announced that she’s running for Governor of Georgia. I beat her single-handedly, without much of a candidate, in 2018, I’ll beat her again.”
