When you’re a kid, there aren’t too many things you feel like you can’t do. For some it could be as ambitious as becoming a superhero, and for others the dream could simply be found in wanting to eat your favorite ice cream for a living. For actress and singer Leslie Grace, however, both of those dreams became a reality this year.
Rising to on-screen prominence with her debut role as Nina Rosario in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2021 film adaptation of In the Heights, Leslie — who is also a three-time Latin Grammy Award nominee — gave critics and movie enthusiasts much to talk about with her portrayal of the character. That chatter grew to be so loud that she nabbed what is guaranteed to be the role of a lifetime: the star of DC Comics’ film adaptation of Batgirl.
While there’s no exact release date for what could possibly set the tone to nestle the actress into an iconic character worth continuous praise — similar to that of Michael Keaton (Batman, Batman Returns) Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Trilogy), and Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns) — word is that Batgirl has an expected premiere on HBO Max at some point in 2022. Of course, though, that doesn’t mean Leslie hasn’t found ways to keep herself busy in the meantime.
Leslie, who also has a slew of additional productions in queue, is also nailing another must-do for kids and kids-at-heart alike: launching a line of yummy ice cream flavors with Haagen-Dazs.
Inspired by the NYC street vendors who provided Leslie with special treats like churros, B&W cookies, soft pretzels, and more, the new line — aptly named City Sweets — sees the nostalgic tastes transform into creamy scoops through five flavors: Dulce de Leche Churro, Coffee Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel, Summer Berry Cake Pop, and Black & White Cookie. Want to make the flavors portable with a snack bar instead of a scoop? Don’t worry — the new collaboration also includes the Dulce de Leche Churro, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel, and Summer Berry flavors as frozen snack bars, too.
While busy letting the world know about her latest collaboration with the iconic ice cream brand (the new flavors are currently available in stores nationwide), Leslie took time out of her demanding schedule to chat with Kitchn’s News & Culture Editor (that’s me!) about the new scoops, her upcoming role as Batgirl, her favorite sweet treat to make, and so much more.
