If you’re the sort of person who loves to set a moody, earthy table when the colder months set in, we’ve got an exciting announcement from one of our favorite pottery brands. Right on the heels of the recent re-launch of one of their best-selling glazes, Haand Pottery just announced the arrival of Terra, a two-tone colorway that features a dark brown-red porcelain exterior with a creamy, satin white interior. This new colorway was inspired by historic Roman pottery, and it’s the perfect earthy palette to showcase cozy fall meals. Currently, Terra is available in select pieces, including Haand’s slightly free-form Ripple collection and the more symmetrical Skali collection.
According to Mark Warren, Haand Pottery‘s co-founder and creative director, Terra was modeled after the “coarse, dense, iron-rich earth dug up (often from mere yards away from a workshop) and employed by potters throughout history.” In fact, the color is inspired by age-old pottery often found in museums in Rome. “I was blown away by how contemporary the outlines of these pieces felt, and the way the burnished surfaces mimicked melamine or bakelite. These were not fancy pieces for rituals or the super-wealthy, but used by people from all walks of life and then thrown in the river or midden heap when broken.”
Of course, a lot of care goes into crafting each piece that Haand makes in their North Carolina studio. To get the glaze for Terra just right, they incorporated brown pigment directly into the porcelain, which yields small variations and beautiful brown speckles upon close inspection. Each piece goes through a multi-step process — including casting, stamping, glazing, and two separate high-temperature kiln firings — and is hand-inspected and polished before being packed and shipped.
We’re huge fans of everything Haand produces, but Terra is unique in that its two-toned design deviates from the brand’s solid and marbleized glazes. And while beautiful in its own right, Terra won’t distract hungry eyes from your food. Whether you serve spaghetti bolognese in the large pasta bowl or fill an oval platter with a hearty salad, your vibrantly colored ingredients will definitely stand out against the white interior glaze
Take a peek at Haand’s new colorway, and bring home your very own piece of this super-special pottery for your fall table and beyond.
